Tree Top Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Department successfully performed its first Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Myomectomy, for the first time in the Maldives, on January 4, 2021. Laparoscopic Myomectomy is a minimally invasive procedure to remove fibroids from the uterus through keyhole surgery. The surgery performed by Dr. Varsha Rengaraj, Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecologist, and assisted by Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecologists, Dr. Mahmoud Aboubakr and Dr. Preethi Solomin, with the support of Anesthetists, Dr. Warren Caballa and Dr. Bishnu Kesavan, and assisted by a skilled nursing team. Laparoscopic (keyhole) Myomectomy is performed by inserting surgical instruments through four minor incisions, with the aid of an internal telescope and camera system. This procedure recognizes the first-ever Laparoscopic Myomectomy performed in the Maldives using a morcellator; a device that grinds the fibroid into smaller tissues, allowing removal through the keyhole. “Unlike conventional open surgery, patients who undergo keyhole surgery heal faster and more efficiently, reducing their hospital stay”, stated Laparoscopic Surgeon, Obstetrician, and Gynaecologist, Dr. Varsha Rengaraj.
