Tree Top Hospital successfully completes ACL Surgery for a patient with congenital heart disease
Tree Top Hospital has completed a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
reconstruction surgery for a guest with congenital heart disease.
Leanne Glauser, 19-year-old woman from Switzerland was born with a
Complex Cyanotic Heart Disease. Cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) causes
heart defects that decrease the amount of oxygen delivery to the body. This can
cause the skin to have a bluish tint, called cyanosis.
Leanne is an avid football player and suffered an injury in 2021 which
led to ACL damage. While she first thought it was only a minor sprain she later
learned it was a complicated injury to her ACL ligament.
On clinical evaluation she was diagnosed to have torn her ACL ligament,
the ligament is in the center of the knee, which is vital for the stability of
the knee. Due to the injury there it simultaneously caused weakening to the
quadriceps muscles of the thigh. ACL injury is one of the most feared sports
injuries that can leave a person vulnerable and can only be corrected through
surgery.
Leanne underwent Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction at Tree Top Hospital
under the expertise of Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Kanninraj Marimuthu.
Leanne shared about her experience at TTH, “I know it is usually a hectic
process to get the preliminary investigations and examinations done prior to a surgery due to my heart condition,
but I had a wonderful time with the team at TTH”.
Leanne is really excited to get back into football again following the
success of the surgery. Dr. Kanninraj shared, “ACL surgery is a routine
surgery but this was a complex clinical situation especially from Anaesthesia
and Cardiology point of view due to the heart disease. Leanne underwent surgery
and was able to walk the same day evening. She is progressing well after the
surgery. We wish her the best and hope she can return to the football pitch
soon”.
