Tree Top Hospital achieves a significant milestone in Maldivian cardiac care by successfully completing the country's first-ever leadless (wireless) pacemaker implantation procedure.
Tree Top Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in Maldivian heart care by Successfully completing the country's first-ever leadless pacemaker surgeries. Two guests, aged 79 years and 90 years, underwent the procedures yesterday, by a team lead by Consultant Cardiologists Dr. Miqdhaadh Shareef and Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Amit Agarwal, alongside visiting Cardiologist Dr. Arun Gopi , demonstrating a major advancement in the hospital's ability to provide sophisticated cardiac interventions.
“This
is a momentous occasion for Tree Top Hospital and the Maldives as a whole,”
said Dr. Srivatsan Sridhar G, CEO of Tree Top Hospital. “By offering leadless
pacemaker procedure, we are expanding access to life-saving cardiac care for guests
who may have to previously travel abroad for the advanced treatment options. This
improves guest outcomes and also reduces healthcare costs for Maldivians in the
management of heart rhythm abnormalities.”
Leadless
Pacemaker Technology
Leadless
(wireless) pacemakers are miniature, self-contained devices implanted directly
into the heart to regulate slow heart rates. Unlike traditional pacemakers,
they eliminate the need for bulky generators and intrusive leads (wires).
“Leadless pacemakers offer several advantages to guests,” explained Dr. Miqdhaadh Shareef, Consultant Cardiologist at Tree Top Hospital. “The procedure is much less invasive, as compared to chest surgery for traditional pacemaker, this results in faster recovery time and very minimal scarring.
“Guests who undergo this procedure can return back to their normal lives within 2-3 days as the recovery time is faster, resulting in overall less time spent at the hospital” added Dr. Amit Agarwal
Benefits
for Guests
This minimally
invasive approach is particularly well-suited for elderly guests or those
seeking a less complex procedure with minimal cosmetic impact. Guests can
typically return home same, or next day and resume normal activities quickly.
“We
are incredibly proud of our cardiology department for achieving this
breakthrough,” said Dr. Mladen Knotek, Medical Director at Tree Top Hospital.
“Their expertise, combined with our state-of-the-art facilities, allows us to
provide our guests with the latest advancements in cardiac care, right here in
the Maldives.”
