Reproductive health: Why lifestyle choices matter
One of the main challenges in health today is the increase in world’ infertility
rate. In order to decrease the infertility, rate it is essential for both men
and women to take good care of their reproductive health. The reproductive
health can be affected by many factors such as lifestyle choices- the modifiable
habits and ways of life that can greatly influence overall health and well-being,
including fertility. In this article the relationship between the reproductive
health and lifestyle choices will be discussed.
To begin with, lifestyle factors may affect the male partner’s fertility
by manifesting as poor semen quality, or it may affect the female partner, who
may present with longer time to achieve pregnancy or be susceptible to
miscarriages.
Firstly, the age at which a couple decides to pursue conception is an
important factor as fertility reduces with time. In men, testosterone levels
decrease with age and result in hypogonadism and in women, oocyte quantity and
quality declines with time and as women age, their time to pregnancy increases
while their ability to maintain pregnancy declines.
Additionally, smoking is one of the most significant lifestyle factors
that can negatively affect reproductive health. Smoking can affect both male
and female fertility. Male smokers have lower antioxidant activity, sperm
density, and sperm penetration compared to that of non- smokers. In women
smoking can lead to early menopause, irregular menstrual cycles, and reduced
egg quality.
Furthermore, stress and exercise can have a significant impact on
reproductive health. Chronic stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that affect
ovulation and sperm production. Exercising regularly can help maintain a
healthy weight, improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, and reduce
stress. Therefore, it is important to manage stress levels and regularly
exercise to improve reproductive health.
Reproductive health is important for both men and women. Lifestyle
choices like age, smoking, stress level and exercises can have a significant
impact on reproductive health. Making the right lifestyle choices can improve
the reproductive health and increase the chances of starting a family.
