IUI: An effective fertility treatment option
Fertility problems can be highly emotional, it's key to recognize that there exist numerous treatment options to address such concerns. One such treatment option is intrauterine insemination (IUI). The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and increase the chances of fertilization.
IUI is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into a
woman’s uterus during ovulation. This is done to increase the chances of
fertilization and pregnancy. IUI is often recommended for couples who have been
trying to conceive for a year or more without success, or for those with
certain fertility issues, such as low sperm count or cervical mucus problems.
Additionally, the process of IUI is relatively simple and straight
forward. First, the woman’s menstrual cycle is closely monitored to determine when
she is ovulating. For some patients, doctors will give medications to stimulate
the ovaries to mature and ovulate. This process is called Ovarian stimulation.
These medications can be oral or injectable medicines. Once ovulation is
detected the male partner provides a semen sample, which is then washed and
concentrated in a lab to separate the most motile and health sperm from the
rest. Next a thin catheter is used to insert the concentrated sperm directly
into the woman’s uterus. This process is typically quick and painless, and
takes only a few minutes to complete. After the procedure the woman is advised
to rest for a short period of time before going about her day.
IUI is relatively simple and noninvasive procedure with few risks or
side effects. The main risk would be multiple pregnancies. Statistics indicate
that this occurs in approximately 1 in 5.
Moreover, the chances of getting pregnant with the help of IUI treatments
ranges between 10% to 20% per cycle. This means that after 6 cycles of IUI, the
chance of pregnancy is around 60% to 80%. However, there are other factors
which affect the success rates for your IUI treatments such as lifestyle,
nutritional factors and psychological factors. The success rate also varies
from person to person, so it is important to speak with your doctor about your
individual chances of success.
IUI can be an effective fertility treatment for couples struggling to
conceive. By placing a sperm directly into the woman’s uterus during ovulation,
IUI can increase the chances of fertilization and pregnancy, if you are considering
IUI as a treatment option, speak to a fertility specialist to determine if it
is the right choice for you.
