Breaking Barriers: The Power and Potential of IVF
Infertility
is a silent struggle. Fortunately, there are world-renowned treatment options
available to help individuals and couples overcome these difficulties and
achieve their dreams of starting a family. One of the most popular treatment
among Maldivians would be in vitro fertilization (IVF) with a success rate that
has been drastically increasing over the years. This medical procedure has
helped many couples to overcome infertility and realise their dream of starting
a family.
Invitro fertilization (IVF) is a process in which an egg is removed from a woman’s
ovaries, which is then fertilised outside the body and then transferred to the
uterus. This treatment is typically used for couples who are struggling to
conceive naturally. During the IVF process, the fertilised eggs are then grown
in a culture dish for few days before being transferred to the woman’s uterus.
In approximately 30-40% of the cases, the IVF treatment results in a successful
pregnancy. However, this rate varies on individual factors such as age,
genetics, lifestyle factors, as well as other illnesses.
IVF
is typically recommended for couples who have been struggling to conceive for
at least a year. It may also be recommended for women who have blocked
fallopian tubes, men with low sperm counts or poor sperm motility and women
with endometriosis (a disease in
which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus).
Furthermore, IVF also allows couples to have
more control over the timing of their pregnancy and allows for genetic testing
of embryos before implantation, which can reduce the likelihood of passing on
genetic disorders to the child.
Moreover, like any medical procedure, IVF
carries some risks although these risks are extremely small. The most
significant risk is the potential for multiple pregnancies, which can increase
the risk of complications such as preterm labour and low birth weight. There is
also a risk of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS), a condition in which
the ovaries become swollen and painful. However, with careful monitoring and
management, these risks can be minimized.
IVF is a valuable medical procedure that has
helped many couples conceive a child. While IVF carries some risks the benefits
of the procedure far outweigh the risks for many couples. If you are struggling
with infertility, IVF maybe an option worth considering, and speaking with a
fertility specialist can provide you with more insight.
