In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Services

IVF involves the process of extracting eggs from a woman's ovaries, creating embryos through fertilizing them with sperm, then replacing the embryos in her uterus. IVF treatments result in successful pregnancy 30% to 40% - and signifies the start of a precious new family member. IVF services are available in the Tree Top Hospital Fertility Centre which is the first of its kind in the Maldives. The IVF treatment does take place over several weeks and involves the following stages:

• Initial consultation
• Pre-treatment
• Egg preparation treatments
• Egg pick procedure
• Embryo transfer
• Follow-up and pregnancy test

Prior to being recommended IVF services, your doctors may recommend to first try intrauterine insemination (IUI). 

What are the chances of success for IVF?

There is a spectrum of factors which can influence your chances of conception. These may include lifestyle factors, diet, psychology, and age. Furthermore, the amount of time you have been trying to conceive and whether or not you have conceived previously plays an important role too.

On average, the probability to deliver a baby after IVF procedure is between 30% to 40%.

What are the risks associated with IVF?

Similar to any other treatment, there are risks and benefits for IVF. On a positive note, the risks associated with IVF are extremely small. There is no increased risk of conceiving a baby with an abnormality with standard IVF or frozen embryo treatment compared to natural conception.

The more significant risk associated with IVF are the risk of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, or more), similar to IUI. The risk of conceiving twins in IVF is one in five pregnancies compared to one in 60 in natural pregnancies. These multiple pregnancies are six times more likely to have complications such as premature delivery, low birth weight, and cerebral palsy than a singleton pregnancy.
